Outer eye corner sits higher than the inner corner.
What positive means
The line from inner canthus to outer canthus rises toward the ear. In one clinical photographic method, that inclination was measured against a horizontal perpendicular to the facial midline.[1] This tool uses the same idea: a face-relative horizontal, then a signed angle.
Degrees versus the label
+1.2° and +8° can both be discussed as “positive,” and they are not the same drawing. Above +2° this site shows the positive display band. Inside ±2° it shows near level and still prints the sign, so a small positive angle is not relabeled as zero.
Positive tilt and an upturned eye shape
An upturned look can come from the lid, the crease, or the corner. Canthal tilt is only the corner-to-corner angle. A positive number does not describe brow height or how much iris is visible.
Why photos change the reading
Camera height, pitch, yaw, roll, and expression can change the apparent angle. The scanner does not “fix” a large turn or a camera far above or below the eyes. It asks for another photo. You can still drag the four corners when the automatic points are slightly off.
What studies actually measure
Lee, Choung, and Choung measured canthal tilt in 76 Korean patients with a mean age of 23.12 years. In that sample the mean tilt was 8.45° ± 3.53° on the right and 8.42° ± 3.81° on the left. They classed 0° to 5° as class I and more than 5° as class II. No participant in that sample was below 0°.[1]
Those figures describe that group and that photographic method. They are not a normal range for every population, and they are not an ideal angle. This site’s ±2° band is a separate display convention.

What counts as positive here?
An average above +2° is labeled positive. The signed degrees come first. +1.2° is a positive direction inside the near-level band, not a different kind of eye.
Is there an ideal positive angle?
No. Published averages belong to a stated sample. They are not a target, and this site does not rank angles.
Why do my two eyes disagree?
Faces are not symmetric, and a photo can shift one outer corner more than the other. Read both numbers, not only the average.
