Canthal Tilt in Looksmaxxing: What the Measurement Actually Means

Why the word shows up

Looksmaxxing is an online appearance culture. Canthal tilt entered that conversation because a single signed angle is easy to screenshot and rank. Forums and short videos then treated “positive” as a status word and “negative” as a flaw. That usage is cultural. It is not how photogrammetry papers define the angle.^[1]

The part that is real

The line from the inner canthus to the outer canthus has a measurable inclination against a face-relative horizontal. You can measure it on the scanner or read the method. Left and right can differ. A photo can move the number.

The part that gets exaggerated

One angle does not determine attractiveness, intelligence, masculinity, health, or status. No source we rely on uses canthal tilt as an IQ or personality test. A published mean from one sample is not an ideal, and this site does not publish a target degree.

Hunter eyes are not this angle

“Hunter eyes” is a looksmaxxing phrase for a whole eye area: brow, crease, lid, and sometimes the corner. Canthal tilt is only the corner-to-corner angle. A positive tilt does not make the rest of that description true, and a near-level tilt does not make it false.

Why filters and selfies mislead

Camera height, pitch, yaw, roll, expression, and face filters can change the apparent angle. A tilted phone or a beautifying filter is a poor way to classify a face. The landmark model runs in the browser after you choose a photo.^[2] It is still a photo estimate.
